RECENT PROJECTS

Aberdeen Marine carry out a wide variety of projects from minor bridge inspections to major infrastructure installations / repairs.
Our recently completed works include:

Mucks Navigation Light Replacement

The Mucks Navigation Light Replacement contract was a complex project, mainly due to the location of the structure; the light is mounted on a steel frame fixed to a concrete and rock formation located on The Muck Rocks, approximately 600m NW of Buckie North Pier Lighthouse.
The framework was fabricated and test-assembled by Welding Engineers in Glasgow, overseen by Aberdeen Marine.
While this was being manufactured, teams of marine personnel, working around falling / low spring tides, accessed Mucks Rock and carried out measuring and drilling operations (using pre-fabricated templates) to ensure the depth of holes necessary to hold the structure could be achieved.
Once drilling was completed, a helicopter was utilised to deliver the structure to the rock and hold it temporarily in place while the fixing bolts were installed.
This was carried out successfully (if a little nervously!) and the installation was satisfactorily completed
.

Canna Pier Repairs

Canna Pier serves the CalMac ferry to the beautiful, but remote, Isle of Canna, one of the 'small isles', the westernmost island of the Inner Hebrides.
This project, managed by the island trustees, the National Trust for Scotland, included a wide range of maintenance works to the pier and surrounding area.
Primarily, the pier structure required repairs to the fenders, bollards, mooring rings and the installation of a new cathodic protection system. Additional repairs to the pier surfacing, boarding steps, ladders and some concrete / crack repairs were required.
Finally, two new marker poles were installed just outwith the slipway area.
The projected was completed to the Clients satisfaction in May 2025
.

River Ayr Access Steps

This project was both economically and environmentally sensitive for the Client, South Ayrshire Council.
The contract, suported by Wallace Stone, was to supply and install a set of large, galvanised steel, steps on the riverbank in front of the UWS building, to provide access to the river for watersports enthusiasts and river users. Aberdeen Marine prepared the grounds / foundations, which included a toe shuttered and poured in the river and a bankseat on the river banking. The steps were manufactured in Glasgow by Welding Engineers and these, along with supporting ssteelwork and accessories, were carefully installed. Access to the steps was created by the installation of over 100m of resin-bound pathway and fencing. Security fencing, to prevent unauthorised access, was also installed, with a key pad on the gate for access.
The project was completed in March 2024 and the steps were formally opened by Olympic Rower Dame Katherine Grainger.

Aird Mhor Walkways

As part of a multi-harbour repairs project for Western isles Council (Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar), Aberdeen Marine supplied and installed a number of fabricated and galvanised steel handrails to Aird Mhor Ferry Terminal walkways. Also included in this overall project were timber and tyre fender repairs to Vatersay Slipway and repairs to fenders at Berneray Ferry Terminal. Aberdeen Marine have now carried out a number of projects in the Western Islesc and while the weather and locations can sometimes be challenging our preparation and thoroughness ensure we completed these projects on time and budget, keeping this Client very happy.

Northumberland Energy Park

The main works here comprised the demolition and removal of a redundant jetty, requiring the careful slinging, cutting and removal of the old timber walkways, then subsea cutting of timber piles and finally burning and removal of the steel piles. Subsequent visits were also carried out to burn and remove sections of the steel sheet piled walls and also to carry out post works dive surveys for the Client.

BAE Scotstoun Deepwater Berth

Aberdeen Marine were contracted to provide the dredging, marine plant and dive teams to carry out the full range of works to remove a section of the existing 'sonar pits' and construct a full new 'sonar pit' between the existing structures. This large-scale project required multiple dive teams on site and a wide range of supporting equipment. The River Clyde can be a challenging environment due to the continual silt ingress to the working areas, requiring a full-time pump to remove this. A large steel shutter was designed and installed to assist with the positioning of the new pre-castconcrete bloks and this was cut up subsea and removed once the blocks were in their final positions.

Kilchoan Ferry Terminal Concrete Repairs

Kilchoan is an active ferry terminal that had suffered from a number of voids below the structure and some concrete damage / spalling below the main deck. A range of repairs were carried out to various areas of and around the strucure, using a variety of different repair materials. Scaffolding was required to access the repairs below the deck soffit and as this was in a tidal zone regular inspections and modifications to this were necessary.

Babcock Rosyth

Aberdeen Marine have been involved in works at Babcock Rosyth for over two years now, taking over as encumbent supplier of dive teams from a previous company. Recent works have included a range of diving projects on the Prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier, along with a large number of infrastructure works, repairs and installations on the base itself.
